Adoption law is a division of Family Law, and adoption lawyers are specialists in this area of the law. While many lawyers may have experience with the simplified form of uncontested stepparent adoptions, they may not be your best choice when it comes to a contested adoption, infant adoption, and international adoptions requiring adoption or re-adoption in the United States. As a matter of fact, if an international adoption becomes complicated, you may want to look for a qualified immigration law specialist.

The American Academy of Adoption Attorneys (or "Quad A") is always a good starting point if you need a referral to a qualified and experienced adoption lawyer. Their requirements for membership include "attorneys who practice, or have otherwise distinguished themselves, in the field of adoption law," and they maintain high standards of ethical practice.
State Bar Associations are also a referral point, as are experienced adoptive parents who have worked with an attorney who upholds high standards of ethics and best practice.
